Pop Art and Humor
Artistic methods influenced by a Pop Art sensibility infused a sense of irreverence and humor into the protest graphics. In particular, the pop-inflected works of three visual artists, Paloma Rodríguez, Caiozzama and Fab Ciraolo, took on iconic status. Their works drew on popular cultural references from comic books and cinema, as well as important figures from Chilean history. Using a technique called “paste-up,” these artists rendered trenchant critiques of the state through tongue-in-cheek humor, irony, and post-modern signifying chains.
